Tollywood Welcomes Heroines Across India
Boundaries are becoming less of a barrier as actresses from different regions make their way into Telugu cinema
Tollywood is increasingly becoming a destination for young actresses from across India, with several newcomers from non-Telugu-speaking states finding opportunities and carving out careers in the industry.
Assam-born Kayadu Lohar, Odisha’s Rithika Nayak and Chandigarh-based Visakha Dhiman are among the young actresses finding opportunities in Telugu cinema, reflecting the industry’s increasingly pan-Indian nature.
“Language and regional barriers are just a myth,” says director Ramesh Vamra, who believes actresses from across the country have considerable scope to establish themselves in Tollywood. “If they are talented, they will eventually make their mark because Telugu audiences have always welcomed actresses from other languages. Actresses from any part of the country can come to Hyderabad and build a career here. It is a cosmopolitan city, and people are accustomed to living and working alongside those from different parts of India,” he adds.
Producer-director Madhura Sreedhar feels the industry needs an even larger pool of actresses to meet growing demand. “Finding the right heroine has become one of the biggest challenges, whether it is for a star hero’s film or a project with a young actor. We need more talented actresses because the demand is increasing every year,” he says.
Several actresses from outside the Telugu-speaking states are already making their mark. Haryana-born Meenakshi Chaudhary has strengthened her position with the success of Lucky Baskhar and Sankranthiki Vasthunam, while Maharashtra-born Bhagyashri Borse has emerged as a sought-after actress following appreciation for Kantha and the commercial success of Lenin. Then there is Kerala-born Mamitha Baiju, who gained popularity among Telugu audiences with Dude, has continued her run with Viswanath and Sons. Mangaluru-born Srinidhi Shetty also caught attention with HIT 3 and is now awaiting Adarsha Kutumbam.
“These actresses are a wonderful combination of talent and glamour. Many of them are also proving themselves in multiple languages, which is a healthy sign for the industry,” says Sreedhar.
As Bollywood names such as Janhvi Kapoor, Rasha Thadani and Shanaya Kapoor also enter the Telugu space, director Trinadha Rao, who is working with Nargis Fakhri and Kavya Thapar in his upcoming film Nenu Ready, believes there is room for everyone. “Certain roles demand both glamour and performance, and a few Bollywood actresses fit those parts. But Telugu cinema will continue to have more leading ladies from the Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam industries.” he concludes.
