Chakra meditation is trending in big metro cities for holistic healing

Long before wellness influencers and meditation apps turned spirituality into an aesthetic, chakra meditation existed as an ancient practice rooted in stillness, balance, and inner awareness.
Scan through the wellness centres in big cities, and you will find chakra meditation studios as the latest addition to holistic healing claims. Imagine incense curling through the air, sound bowls humming in the background, dim lights, slow breathing, and a room full of people trying to disconnect from the chaos outside. Long before wellness influencers and meditation apps turned spirituality into an aesthetic, chakra meditation existed as an ancient practice rooted in stillness, balance, and inner awareness. Today, it has found a surprising audience among Gen-Z — a generation exhausted by burnout, anxiety, overstimulation, and the pressure to constantly stay “ON.”
Chakra Meditation
From healing circles and guided breathwork sessions to meditation studios and spiritual retreats, young people are increasingly turning toward chakra meditation not necessarily to become spiritual gurus, but to feel emotionally grounded. “There’s a reason these practices are resonating with urban audiences right now,” says mindfulness coach Arjun Malhotra. “Everyone is constantly switched on — mentally, emotionally, digitally. Chakra meditation permits people to pause without feeling guilty.”
For many young adults, wellness no longer begins and ends with gym memberships or Pilates classes. Emotional exhaustion has become impossible to ignore. Endless scrolling, corporate fatigue, unstable routines, and rising anxiety levels have pushed people to search for softer forms of healing — practices that feel less performative and more personal.
A Perfect Balance
At its core, chakra meditation focuses on balancing the body’s seven energy centres, believed to run from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
Each chakra is linked to a different emotional and physical state: grounding, creativity, confidence, love, communication, intuition, and spiritual connection. Through breathing exercises, visualization, sound vibrations, and mantra chanting, practitioners attempt to release emotional blockages and restore balance.
Though trending on social media today, chakra meditation is deeply rooted in ancient Hindu traditions and was historically linked to spiritual awareness, not aesthetics or trends.
“The rise of chakra meditation reflects a cultural shift,” explains mindfulness coach Kabir Anand. “Spirituality today is becoming softer, more personalised, and deeply connected to wellness culture and identity.”
Part of its appeal lies in its simplicity. There are no strict rules or elaborate rituals. For many, it is less about religion and more about finding calm and silence in increasingly hectic lives.
Significance Of Stillness
“In cities where burnout has become almost routine, chakra meditation gives many young people something they rarely experience — stillness,” says psychologist Dr Aarya Mehta. “Whether they fully believe in energy healing or not, the ritual itself creates emotional comfort.”
And while the spiritual language surrounding chakras may not resonate with everyone, science does support many of meditation’s effects on the body and mind. Breathwork and focused meditation activate the parasympathetic nervous system — the part responsible for calming the body after stress. Studies have also linked regular meditation to reduced cortisol levels, lower anxiety, and improved emotional regulation.
Mental health expert Dr Kiara Fernandes explains, “Even if someone doesn’t connect with the spiritual aspect of chakras, the act of slowing down, breathing deeply, and becoming more emotionally aware can have a very real impact on stress and anxiety.”
Perhaps that is why chakra meditation continues to resonate.
