New Queens of Tollywood

Tollywood is witnessing the rise of a dynamic new generation of actresses, with Meenakshi Chaudhary, Bhagyashri Borse, Kayadu Lohar, Mamita Baiju and Srinidhi Shetty leading the charge. Joining them are actresses Sri Gouri Priya, Shivani Nagaram, Faria Abdullah and Manasa Varanasi, making the race for plum roles more competitive than ever.

Producer-director Madhura Sreedhar says the industry actually needs a larger pool of heroines. “Finding the right heroine is one of the biggest challenges today, whether it’s for a star hero or a young actor. Demand is growing every year, and we need more talented actresses.”

Meenakshi Chaudhary has cemented her place with the success of Lucky Baskhar and Sankranthiki Vasthunam, while Bhagyashri Borse has emerged a sought-after name after earning praise for Kantha and scoring a commercial hit with Lenin.

Malayalam actress Mamita Baiju, who won Telugu fans with Dude, is set to make her Tollywood debut opposite Suriya in Viswanath and Sons. Kayadu Lohar has bagged Nani’s The Paradise, while KGF actress Srinidhi Shetty, after impressing in HIT 3, is awaiting the release of Adarsha Kutumbam with Venkatesh.

“These actresses bring both talent and glamour. Many are also proving themselves across multiple languages, which is a healthy sign for the industry,” says Sreedhar.

He, however, feels it is far too early to rank them. “They have shown tremendous promise, but rankings come only after sustained success. They need time to establish themselves,” he adds.

The influx of fresh talent has naturally intensified competition for established names such as Sreeleela and Krithi Shetty. “Every actress goes through highs and lows, and one solid hit can completely transform a career.”

Madhura Sreedhar also cautions young actresses against letting early success go to their heads. “Actresses should manage success wisely and rely on professional managers,” he observes.

Director Trinadha Rao, who is working with Nargis Fakhri and Kavya Thapar in Nenu Ready, believes South actresses need not worry about competition from Bollywood stars. “Bollywood actresses do only selective Telugu films, so South heroines will continue to enjoy more opportunities. Some roles demand a certain blend of glamour and performance that Bollywood actresses bring, but Telugu cinema will continue to draw most of its leading ladies from the Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam industries.”
