‘Mirzapur’ To Drop ‘Shoorveer’ Song From Climax
The makers will replace the song in the violent climax with background music after the Delhi HC called its use in the sequence “not in good taste”
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia made the observation while hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by Prashant Kumar Singh. The court questioned whether the use of a tribute to Maharana Pratap during a violent sequence amounted to “revering violence”.
The PIL objected to the use of a song originally composed in honour of the historical warrior as the backdrop to a fictional gangland sequence. The plea argued that this created an undesirable association with the fictional characters and could be seen as glorifying criminality while undermining the song’s cultural significance.
Excel Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., the film’s production house, maintained that the song was used only to heighten the climax, in which the protagonist fights off a group of goons. The producers submitted that there was no intended comparison with Maharana Pratap.
The makers have already approached the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a proposal to replace ‘Shoorveer’ with background music in the sequence.
