FIFA has confirmed and released the FIFA World Cup 2026 match schedule starting on June 11, 2026, with the group stages and ending with the final on July 19, 2026. With the schedule confirming 104 matches to be played, a significant jump from the previously 64 matches played, it promises to be a long and entertaining campaign.

The increase in matches comes as a consequence of FIFA expanding its team roster for the tournament from a previous 32 to 48 teams. It comes into play as an attempt to inspire global participation and opportunities for teams and players who have previously not found a place in the marquee tournament.

The current format will include 48 teams who will play a total of 72 matches in the group stage in 12 groups of 4 teams each. 32 teams will advance from this stage towards the knockout stages, the winner of which will be crowned the FIFA World Cup Champion.

Current champions, Argentina, found their talisman in their captain Lionel Messi in their last campaign of 2022 and will look to repeat the feat with Messi returning this year for a record 6th FIFA WC appearance.
