Karimnagar: Three men allegedly assaulted and extorted ₹5,000 and an iPhone from a 19-year-old man at Thigalaguttapally in Karimnagar district after threatening to kill him, police said on Saturday.

The case was registered against D. Darshan, 27, of Durgamma Gudi Colony, K. Rohit Kumar alias Rishi, 22, of Gandhi Nagar, and K. Madhu, 25, of Ganesh Nagar, all from Karimnagar city, following a complaint by P. Rohan, 19, of Vavilalapally.

Police said Rohan had gone to a box cricket venue at Thigalaguttapally on May 13 when Darshan and Rohit allegedly cornered him near a grocery store and dragged him to an isolated place. They allegedly assaulted him and demanded money. Madhu later joined them.

The accused allegedly threatened to kill Rohan by throwing him into an open well, following which he handed over his iPhone and ₹5,000 in cash. Police said the gang later took him in a car, dropped him near his residential area and warned him against approaching police.

Karimnagar rural circle inspector A. Niranjan Reddy said the three accused were repeat offenders out on bail and were arrested while attempting to flee the city. Police seized a car, the victim’s iPhone and three mobile phones from their possession at Sameer Dhaba on the Bommakal bypass road.

Police said Darshan was involved in three previous cases, Rohit in a Pocso case and Madhu in a narcotics case. Niranjan Reddy said action, including invocation of the PD Act, would be taken against persons involved in extortion and rowdyism.
