Wrong-Side Driving Increased On Jubilee Hills One-Way Route
Wrong-side driving by two-wheelers has increased at night on the Jubilee Hills one-way stretch, prompting traffic police to step up enforcement.
Wrong-side driving, particularly by two-wheelers, has increased during night and late-night hours on the recently introduced one-way stretch at Jubilee Hills Checkpost, though traffic movement has largely remained orderly during the day.
Police constables have been stationed at key junctions to regulate traffic and prevent motorists from entering the one-way stretch from the prohibited direction. A constable stationed near the Jubilee Hills Checkpost signal said he had stopped at least 10 motorists attempting to drive on the wrong side in the two hours before a commuter approached him to complain about the violations.
According to traffic police, commuters coming from the Cable Bridge are not permitted to take a right turn and are required to turn left towards Jubilee Hills Checkpost. Police said some motorists attempt to enter the one-way stretch from the prohibited direction at night despite the presence of personnel.
“Though we keep trying to stop commuters coming from the wrong side, sometimes they try to come onto us and then move past us. If they see a police officer ahead, some of them turn back,” a constable said.
A commuter, Anish, said vehicles suddenly approaching from the opposite direction were alarming. “Me and my cousins were out for a stroll one day and, all of a sudden, I saw a bike coming from the opposite direction. Initially, it was a regular road, later it became one-way and now seeing a random person coming from the opposite direction not only freaked me out but triggered me,” he said.
Anish added that when he approached the constable to bring the issue to his notice, “I myself saw how the motorists were coming onto him, and wondered what about their safety.”
A senior traffic police officer said personnel had been occupied with Ganesha festival bandobast until the immersion and would now be assigned more extensively to traffic duties.
Another constable said the second lane of the one-way stretch would be closed at night as part of measures to prevent motorists from entering from the wrong direction.
