Uta Bowli Restoration Begins, Old Spring To Be Revived at Bum-Rukn-Ud-Dowla Lake

HYDERABAD: HYDRAA has begun restoration of the historic 1.5-acre Uta Bowli, a spring-fed well adjoining Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla lake at Rajendranagar, after years of neglect.
The work was taken up on the directions of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath had brought the condition of the historic bowli to the Chief Minister’s notice during restoration of the lake.
After inaugurating the rejuvenated Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla lake on March 8, the Chief Minister directed HYDRAA to restore the bowli located below the lake.
The agency had begun work at the lake in August 2024 by clearing encroachments from the full tank level and buffer zones. The lake, which once extended over nearly 100 acres, had shrunk considerably due to encroachments and neglect.
HYDRAA subsequently removed encroachments, excavated the lake, rejuvenated its surroundings and restored the premises for public use.
The adjoining historic bowli had also fallen into disrepair, with plastic waste, garbage, soil, silt and thick vegetation reducing its water-holding capacity. HYDRAA is now removing the accumulated waste and silt and restoring the structure to revive its storage capacity.
The Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla lake is believed to have been built around 1770 and was named after Nawab Rukn-ud-Dowla, who served as prime minister. Historical accounts indicate that water from the lake passed through medicinal vegetation and was naturally filtered before reaching the bowli.
