Surakshi and Viswanth.

Hyderabad: A six-year-old girl and her relative were killed after a speeding lorry hit them near Tank Bund in the early hours of Sunday.

According to police, the deceased were identified as Surakshi (6) and her relative Viswanth (41), residents of Jonnabanda in Old Alwal.

Surakshi was the younger daughter of Sainath and Ashwini, who have two daughters, Sharanya and Surakshi. Sainath runs a Mee-Seva centre in Old Alwal, where his relative Viswanath and his wife Sindhu also work.

Sainath, Ashwini, their two daughters, Viswanath and Sindhu went to a theatre in Kukatpally to watch a movie on Saturday on the occasion of Surakshi's birthday. Later, the family travelled to Ambedkar Statue near Tank Bund and reached the area at around 2.15 am on Sunday. The family planned to celebrate Surakshi’s birthday near Hussainsagar.

The family stopped their car on the roadside. Viswanth was carrying Surakshi while crossing the road when a speeding lorry coming from the Secunderabad side hit them.

Surakshi died on the spot, while Viswanth sustained serious injuries. He was immediately shifted to Gandhi Hospital for treatment. However, he died while undergoing treatment on Sunday evening.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the accident.
