TGHRC Seeks Report on Torture of Elderly Woman in Bhadradri Kothagudem

Hyderabad: Telangana State Human Right Commission took suo-motu cognizance of inhuman treatment and physical torture of an elderly woman of Jinkalagudem village in Bhadradri Kothagudem district and called for a detailed report from the Collector.
It took the matter seriously based on the newspaper report and sought for a detailed report by October 27 from the District Collector explaining the present condition and medical treatment of the victim, action taken against the persons’ involved and preventive measures taken to avoid recurrence.
According to news report, the woman was allegedly subjected to severe physical torture on the suspicion that she was possessed by an evil spirit and that witchcraft had been performed on her. It was reported that she was taken to an isolated agricultural field, made to climb a tree and allegedly beaten with whips.
The report further alleged that nails were placed and driven under her hands and feet and that she was made to stand on them and was repeatedly beaten until she became extremely weak and lost consciousness.
The incident was reportedly stated to have occurred in July 2026 and came to light recently, with videos purportedly showing the alleged torture circulating on social media.
Taking note of the allegations, the Commission observed that, if found true, the incident raises serious concerns regarding the right to life, dignity and protection from cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of the victim.
