The Drugs Wing of the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) said it had detected violations at 111 medical shops during a special drive against the illegal sale and diversion of habit-forming drugs in vulnerable areas of the CURE region on Tuesday.

The personnel, accompanied by the TG SAFE police, conducted raids in Charminar, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet and Goshamahal zones, and focused on the sale of habit-forming drugs and pregabalin-containing formulations besides zolpidem, alprazolam and codeine-containing cough syrups.

The Drugs Wing used decoy operations and test purchases to check the indiscriminate sale of medicines, particularly those classified under Schedule H1 and Schedule X of the Drugs Rules.

Officials found medicines being sold without prescriptions from registered medical practitioners and in some cases without a registered pharmacist being present. Other violations included sale of medicines without bills, failure to maintain or produce sales bills, non-maintenance of prescription drug and Schedule H1 registers, failure to produce purchase bills and irregularities in maintaining copies of sales and purchase bills.

Show-cause notices have been issued to all 111 medical shops for the violations. TG SAFE said departmental action, including suspension or cancellation of drug licences, would be initiated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules made under it.
