Hyderabad: The school education department has directed all 42,082 schools across the state, including government, local body, aided, residential and private institutions, to take up two nationwide school initiatives this year. Schools will conduct disability-related screening of children from Pre-Primary to Class XII under ‘PRASHAST’, while also completing a self-assessment of sanitation, drinking water, hygiene, waste management and green practices under the Swachh Evam Harit Vidyalaya Rating (SHVR) 2026. PRASHAST (Pre-Assessment Holistic Screening Tool) has been developed by the NCERT.

About 3.65 lakh teachers mapped in UDISE+ must first complete PRASHAST sensitisation through training and awareness modules on the app or portal by August 31. It covers all 21 disability conditions recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Regular teachers will carry out Part-I screening based on observable indicators. Special Educators will undertake Part-II verification wherever required.

The department said the exercise was intended to help teachers recognise possible disability-related needs early and facilitate support and referral without stigma or discrimination.

Schools must separately register on the SHVR portal and complete their self-assessment by September 30. The rating covers school sanitation, safe drinking water, hygiene, waste management, environmental sustainability and green practices. Ten Telangana schools received recognition under the Swachh Vidyalaya initiative during 2025-26, according to the Department. It expects more schools to qualify for national-level recognition this year as all 42,082 institutions participate.
