Hyderabad: The Telangana Higher Education Council has issued notices to Malla Reddy Deemed University after the institution declared an official holiday and postponed classes and exams to host a film promotion event.

The university had reportedly announced a holiday on October 30, 2026, for a promotional event for the movie Aadarsha Kutumbam, associated with actor Venkatesh and director Trivikram. Taking serious note of an educational institution shutting down academic operations for a commercial film event, the Council decided to seek an explanation from the management.

The issue became a talking point in the state after SFI State President Rajanikanth and other leaders, including Keerthan and Mamatha, lodged a complaint with the Council on Thursday, demanding a comprehensive inquiry and action. Reacting to the complaint, Council Chairperson V. Balakista Reddy said notices will be issued to the university, and its explanation sought.

Meanwhile, in the wake of a recent incident at a college where a student died and several others were injured during a Dandiya programme, a proposal has been submitted to Education Department Secretary Yogita Rana and Principal Secretary to the CM's office Sridhar to regulate student events in universities.
