HYDERABAD: BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday accused the Congress leadership of insulting the Vande Mataram and urged political parties to respect national symbols and patriotic sentiments. He said the Constituent Assembly had accorded the National Song equal respect and status with the National Anthem.

Speaking at the 376th birth anniversary celebrations of Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud at the BJP state office, Ramchander Rao referred to the only two stanzas of the National Song being rendered at an event at Goa that was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and the controversy over the party’s Independence Day programme where Kharge and senior party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were present.

“The BJP Telangana unit strongly condemns the stand taken by the Congress on Vande Mataram. Every political party has a responsibility to respect national sentiments, national symbols, the national anthem and the national song, rising above politics,” he said.

Ramchander Rao also demanded that the Congress government rename Jangaon district after Sardar Papanna, as promised in its 2023 election manifesto. He said the government had been in power for nearly three years but had not acted on the promise. He alleged that the government was neglecting several assurances.

Former Governor Bandaru Dattatreya said Papanna Goud’s revolt against the Mughal empire and his fight for the self-respect of weaker sections should inspire the younger generation. Malkajgiri BJP MP Eatla Rajender, MLC Malk Komuraiah and other BJP leaders attended the programme.
