Subhani Awarded Bapu Award For Excellence In Cartoon Journalism
“Known for his silence, he lets his cartoons speak louder than words,” Ramana Chary said
Hyderabad: Deccan Chronicle's Cartoon Editor Shaik Subhani was conferred the Bapu Award by the Bapu-Ramana Academy on Monday. Subhani launched his new book, ‘40 To The Point’, at the ceremony, celebrating his four decades as a cartoonist.
The award was conferred by former IAS officer K.V. Ramana Chary and Nerella Sharada, chairperson of the Telangana Commission for Women, at the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Telugu University premises. “Known for his silence, he lets his cartoons speak louder than words,” Ramana Chary said.
The award, created to honour the legacy of the iconic director, writer, poet and cartoonist Bapu, and renowned writer Mullapudi Ramana, has been conferred to stalwarts in the arts and writing or poetry fields on the birth anniversary of Bapu for the past 11 years.
The Ramana Award was conferred to prominent poet Jonnavithula Ramalingeswara Rao, and the Bapu-Ramana lifetime achievement award was presented to actor and former MP Maganti Murali Mohan.
Ramana Chary recalled that in a cartoon competition held by Andhra Jyothi, where Bapu, Mullapudi Ramana, and Sriramana were the judges, Subhani won first prize and came to Hyderabad for the first time to collect it. “Since then, he shone like a star,” he said.
“When N.T. Rama Rao was the Chief Minister, MLAs set up a camp in Hotel Viceroy. Around that time, a lunar eclipse occurred. Connecting them both, Subhani drew a cartoon which NTR appreciated. That is how impactful his work is,” Ramana Chary recalled.
