Snake Bite Scare at Mahabubabad Girls’ College Turns Out to Be a False Alarm
Parents and student unions alleged that the fact a student could easily mistake a thread for a snake highlighted poor lighting and maintenance in the hostel's sensitive areas.
Warangal: A second-year intermediate student of the Social Welfare Girls Residential College in Inugurthy of Mahbubabad district was rushed to a hospital for a suspected snake bite, but police and health officials later clarified that the incident was a false alarm caused by a minor injury sustained in a dimly lit bathroom and was misunderstood.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed that there were no bite marks or symptoms consistent with a snake bite. The student’s health condition was stable. Her distress was primarily due to severe anxiety and the assumption of a snake attack, medical officials stated.
According to Inugurthi sub-inspector G. Karunakar, police rushed to the college upon receiving a complaint. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the student had sustained a scratch injury on her right hand, likely caused by a sharp iron hook on the bathroom door. The student panicked after seeing a thread-like object hanging in the bathroom and mistakenly assumed it was a snake, Karunakar told this newspaper.
Parents and student unions alleged that the fact a student could easily mistake a thread for a snake highlighted poor lighting and maintenance in the hostel's sensitive areas. They have reiterated their demand for a safety audit and the clearing of overgrown vegetation that surrounds the college building. The college authorities immediately initiated a cleaning drive and promised to repair faulty door hooks and improve lighting in common areas to prevent future panic among the students.
