SHE Teams Nab 678 Harassers during Bonalu in Hyderabad
During special surveillance operations conducted throughout the festival, several incidents of harassment in crowded public places were detected
Hyderabad: The SHE Teams of the Women Safety Wing implemented extensive security and surveillance measures during the Bonalu festival-2026 to ensure the safety, security, and dignity of women and children attending the festivities across Hyderabad.
Considering the large congregations at temples, procession routes, bus stops, metro stations, marketplaces, and other crowded locations, SHE Teams intensified deployment in vulnerable areas through plain-clothes surveillance, video monitoring, and immediate intervention against offenders.
The SHE Teams received 122 complaints under various categories during the festival bandobust. A total of 678 persons involved in harassment, eve-teasing, stalking, inappropriate behavior, and other acts of misconduct against women were caught red-handed, supported by videographic evidence in several instances.
Twenty-five persons were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment along with fines by the court concerned. Additionally, 13 cases investigated by SHE Teams resulted in convictions through effective investigation and timely legal action, said Dr. Lavanya NJP, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Women and Child Safety Wing.
During special surveillance operations conducted throughout the festival, several incidents of harassment in crowded public places were detected. Those, who inappropriately touched, followed, or otherwise harassed women devotees and visitors were immediately apprehended.
Petty cases were registered against the offenders under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Hyderabad City Police Act. Eleven respondents were convicted and sentenced to up to three days of simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs.1,050 each.
Around 26 people were convicted in petty cases and imposed a fine of Rs.1,050 each, along with an order to perform community service, reinforcing the message of zero tolerance towards offenses against women.
In addition to enforcement, SHE Teams undertook extensive preventive measures throughout the Bonalu celebrations. Over 400 awareness programs and 110 surveillance and observation activities were conducted across temples, procession routes, educational institutions, public transport hubs, and commercial areas.
These initiatives focused on creating awareness regarding women's safety, cyber safety, legal provisions, emergency helplines, responsible public behavior, and encouraging women to report offenses without hesitation.
