Hyderabad: Senior BRS leader and former minister T. Harish Rao on Friday alleged that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and the Congress government for “burying the farmers declaration made by Rahul Gandhi on his birthday.”

Addressing a press meet in Siddipet, Harish Rao said Rahul Gandhi had promised at a public meeting Warangal ahead of the polls, that a   Rs 500 bonus over MSP for all crops would be provided. The Congress government has now made it clear that it will neither provide the promised bonus nor procure all crops from farmers.

The announcement that the government will buy only those crops and quantities approved by the Centre was a complete betrayal of Telangana farmers and a direct violation of the commitments made before elections, he said.

Recalling that the previous BRS government had taken the responsibility for procurement even when the Centre was unwilling to do so, Harish Rao demanded that the Congress government tender an unconditional apology to farmers for its complete reversal of its election promises.

On fertilizer supply, Harish Rao said the app based system was restricting urea supply. The restriction to two bags of urea will sound the death knell for farmers raising chilli, paddy and other crops despite higher requirements for these crops, he said.

He warned that the seven fine rice varieties now selected for bonus payments were prone to pests and also produce lower yields, resulting in greater losses for farmers despite the bonus. While this is so, the government owed farmers Rs 29,358 crore in Rythu Bharosa dues, and that delays in payment of premium to LIC resulted in Rythu Bima benefits not reaching affected families in time.
