Hyderabad: Amita Baig, former executive director, World Monuments Fund, India said people wer struck by the fact that the Taj Mahal had a deep sacred meaning.
Although it was no longer a sacred site, its original intention and meaning must still be respected, she said and added it should not be treated merely as a commercial tourism attraction or a beautiful monument.
Delivering a special talk, ‘Taj Mahal: The Sacred and the Sublime’ here on Saturday, Baig said the monument carried religious and cultural meanings, and it was the responsibility to help the next generation understand its importance.
Baig also pointed out that the structure design and symmetry had deeper meanings, including the way certain elements are placed at its centre.
The colonial interpretations often created a barrier between people and the real heritage. Colonial authorities viewed the monument mainly in terms of the value of its stone and architecture.
A special exhibition tried to explain the meaning behind those elements. Every flower, carving and design has a connection to its cultural and religious traditions, including references from the Quran, she said.
