Residents Seek Clarity on Defence Road Project

Hyderabad:Residents of Vasavinagar and surrounding areas in Karkhana have sought clarity from the government over a proposed defence road project, fearing that land acquisition could lead to demolition of homes and displacement of families that have lived there for decades.

The concerns were raised at a meeting of residents with Rajiv Rahadari Property Owners joint action committee chairman J. Satish Gupta at the Vasavinagar Welfare Association premises. Residents said they were worried about reports that land along the corridor could be acquired for widening or development connected to defence requirements.

A major concern was the extent of land that could be affected. Maria L, a resident, questioned “why additional acquisition was required” and sought a clear explanation of the alignment, measurements and properties likely to be impacted before any work begins. She said uncertainty over the proposal had left families worried about the future of houses and properties built over several years.

Gupta said they sought a comprehensive survey before any acquisition or demolition and asked the authorities to hold consultations with property owners. “We also want the government to disclose the proposed road alignment and explain how much land would be required on either side,” he added.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of reducing the proposed width of the project to minimise the impact on residential properties. Residents argued that alternatives should be examined before houses are affected and said technical options should be explored to reduce land requirements.

Gupta hoped that their concerns would be taken up with the authorities and said the government should provide complete information before proceeding with the project. He said residents “should be given an opportunity to understand the proposal and raise objections before decisions affecting their properties are taken.”

Residents also sought fair compensation if acquisition becomes unavoidable. They said compensation should take into account prevailing market values and the disruption caused to families, particularly those who have lived in the neighbourhood for decades.

Traffic and access concerns were also raised. Residents said any road work in the densely populated Karkhana area would have to account for existing neighbourhood roads, movement of local residents and access to homes and businesses.

The meeting came amid continuing concern among property owners along the Rajiv Rahadari corridor over possible acquisition for road development. Residents sought written clarity from the authorities on the exact requirement, acquisition process, compensation and rehabilitation before work is taken forward.

They said further discussions would be held with officials and public representatives to seek a solution that improves connectivity while limiting the impact on existing residential neighbourhoods.
