Hyderabad: Hundreds of worshippers have been attending early morning Lenten services at Mennonite Brethren Bethel Church as part of a 40-day ‘Meditation on the Cross’ programme that began on February 23.

On Wednesday, the 38th day of the observance was held, with participants gathering from 4 am for three-hour sessions involving devotional songs and messages on self-examination, repentance and spiritual renewal.

Dr Joycherian, senior pastor of the United People Fellowship, has been delivering daily messages on the theme, alongside guest speakers who address the congregation each day. The programme has drawn attendees from multiple denominations.

The concluding programme is scheduled on Good Friday, marking the 40th day.

Mathew Jacob, one of the organisers, said, “To demonstrate genuine care, organisers arranged bus transportation so that everyone could participate, regardless of circumstance. What began as an early morning routine evolved into a powerful spiritual practice, bringing the community closer to God and to one another at Mennonite Brethren Bethel Church.”

The 40-day early morning service has become an annual practice for several Christian families, many of whom observe fasting until evening. A section of elderly participants has opted for online streaming to take part in the services.

Dr Joycherian said, “During these 40 days, the faithful grew closer to God. The meditation on the Cross reflects the suffering of Jesus Christ for the redemption of humanity’s sins. Lent offers an opportunity for those who have strayed in their faith to repent and return to the right path through confession and renewed devotion.”
