Hyderabad:Former irrigation minister and senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao on Wednesday expressed hope that the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA), under the Government of India, which acknowledged “the gravity of the concerns” he raised on behalf of the people of Telangana in a letter to PPA and will execute all promised flood-mitigation, protection, rehabilitation and resettlement measures to ensure that no village, farmer, agricultural land, livelihood, or family in Telangana will suffer on account of Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram Project.
Harish Rao, in a statement, said following his letter to the PPA on the critical need to protect upstream habitations in Telangana from submergence and backwater effects of the project, the Authority responded that all these issues were receiving top priority and attention.
He said the PPA had, in its assurance to Telangana at the inter-state meeting on April 8, 2025, has said that all areas within Telangana likely to be affected up to the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of the Polavaram Project will either be fully protected through robust engineering safeguards or acquired in accordance with the applicable Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) provisions.
He said PPA’s response validates the long-standing concerns raised by Telangana, adding that the formal assurance given by PPA, a statutory authority of Government of India, is a significant step towards safeguarding the interests of the affected people.
