Over 40 PVTG Gurukul Students Fall Ill After Eating Khichdi in Nagarkurnool; Food Samples Sent for Testing

Hyderabad:More than 40 students of the Primitive Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) Gurukul Hostel at Mannanur in Amrabad mandal of Nagarkurnool district fell ill with suspected food poisoning after consuming khichdi on Thursday.
A total of 27 boys studying in classes VII to X were admitted to the area government hospital, Achampet after complaining of vomiting and abdominal pain. Another 10 to 15 students were admitted to the primary health centre in Mannanur, taking the total number of affected students to over 40.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dr S. Srinivasa Rao, medical superintendent of the area government hospital, said the affected students, aged between 12 to 16 years, were from the boys’ hostel and had presented with vomiting and abdominal pain.
Following the incident, the district medical and health officer directed food safety inspectors to collect food samples from the hostel for laboratory analysis to ascertain the cause of the suspected food poisoning.
Meanwhile, Nagarkurnool MP Mallu Ravi and Achampet MLA Dr Vamshi Krishna, who are currently in New Delhi, released a video stating that they had spoken to the district collector and sought a detailed inquiry into the incident.
They noted that similar food poisoning cases had occurred in the mandal last year and said strict action would be taken against those found responsible, including caretakers, teachers or the principal, if negligence is established. They stressed that all residential educational institutions, including government schools, must ensure students’ safety and proper food quality.
