Nepalis in Hyderabad Worried Over Floods Back Home
Families stay connected as workers and students worry over relatives in flood-hit areas
Hyderabad: With part of their country affected by flash floods, members of the Nepali community working and living in Hyderabad said they were staying in touch with their families and closely following the situation back home.
Dinesh, a native of Pokhara who works at a tea stall in Ramanthapur, said he calls home daily. He moved to Hyderabad six years ago. “We are worried about what is happening back home. Every day, I call my family to make sure they are safe,” he said.
Aneesh, a cook from Kathmandu who works in a city restaurant, said the floods had become a major concern among Nepali workers here. “Even though we are here for work, our minds are back home. We keep checking the news and calling our families for updates,” he said.
Kunal, who came to Hyderabad 10 years ago from Nepal, works as a chef at a restaurant in Secunderabad. He said the uncertainty was stressful. “My family lives in Kathmandu, so they are safe, but some of my relatives live near the border where the flooding has occurred. They are not exactly in the affected region, but we are still worried because the situation is uncertain,” he said.
Archana, a Nepali student who moved to Hyderabad with her parents, said her family in Kathmandu was safe but worried about the situation in the flood‑hit areas. “When I am in Nepal, I stay in Kathmandu. From what I have heard, the situation there is not very bad, but the areas where the floods occurred have been badly affected,” she said.
Archana said she did not have relatives in the affected areas but had spoken to her family. “They are doing fine, but they are scared that something more could happen. They are as shocked as the rest of the world and are hoping that everyone who is missing is found,” she said.
“Even if this had happened anywhere in the world, it would be a very horrifying situation. One moment you are enjoying life and the next moment you are buried under debris,” she said.
Ramesh, a watchman working in an apartment in West Marredpally, said he was worried about his family back home. “We keep calling our families whenever we hear about heavy rains or floods. We feel helpless being so far away and can only hope that everyone is safe,” he said.
Nepali workers in Hyderabad said they were worried about their families and were staying in touch through phone calls and news updates.
