Hyderabad:The Telangana government said on Sunday that it had received information that a state resident, Alli Ilesh, was safe in Nepal following the deadly flash floods, while 21 others from the state were still missing.

The government, in a press release, said Ilesh’s family had confirmed that he was in contact with them and that he was expected to reach the later in the day. The government had on August 27 placed the number of people missing from Telangana at 22.

The government said the Centre had informed that 449 Indian nationals had crossed from Tibet into Nepal on Saturday. The Nepal government had made available photographs and basic particulars of the deceased on the Nepal Police Disaster Portal.

The process of identifying mortal remains kept in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West and Kathmandu districts is underway, it said.

According to Nepal police, DNA profiling of victims was not mandatory where visual identification was possible. The mortal remains would be handed over to the next of kin upon establishing the identity of the deceased and their relationship with the deceased.

The release said DNA profiles of first-degree relatives, such as parents, brothers or sisters, would be matched with the samples collected by Nepal forensic authorities, where visual identification is not possible. It said relatives are not required to travel to Nepal solely for DNA profiling.

DNA profiles prepared at their place of residence may be submitted for matching.

The detailed protocol for identification, handover and repatriation of mortal remains was still being finalised by the Nepal authorities, the state government release said.

The release requested families to obtain necessary guidance from Telangana Bhavan or the Indian embassy in Kathmandu before undertaking DNA testing or travelling to Nepal for identification. Information in each case would be shared with each affected families first, and made public only after official confirmation.

The Centre has said that more than 275 Indians and 128 persons of Indian origin remain missing in Nepal. On Sunday, the MEA on its 'X' handle shared a list of 149 people who were rescued.
