HYDERABAD: Eyewitnesses and students alleged severe operational negligence at MVSR Engineering College’s Dandiya event, where an 80‑foot structure collapsed, killing a girl student and injuring several others. They said the truss had been erected without adequate structural support. Citizens questioned why government agencies that issue permissions for such events do not appoint overseers, and called for strict fire policies and traffic management near venues.

B. Archana of Secunderabad, who attended Dandiya and Garba for the first time, said safety and fire hazards must be prioritised. “Most events use heavy lighting, and there is risk of short circuits. Estimating numbers correctly is the first step. Traffic management around the venue is equally important,” she said.

Archana and her family welcomed such events for their scale and atmosphere. “Many families are experiencing something special — the dazzle and vibe. Earlier, these programmes were limited to close circles and required strong connections to gain access. Now tickets are available online and there are choices. Dandiya has become a family event, with almost all members joining,” she said.

Dr Ravinuthala Shashidhar, national spokesperson for the VHP, said authorities must take responsibility whenever such incidents occur. “They restrict themselves to giving permissions, but they must oversee safety arrangements. In the city, several Dandiya and Garba events are happening. Authorities have to ensure safety,” he told DC.

He pointed out that when Malla Reddy institutions organised a film promotion programme, an incident occurred, yet educational institutions continue to host such events. “What is the government doing about this?” he asked.

Vishal Thakur of Hurricane, one of the oldest event management firms, said: “This is unfortunate, but usually all security and safety measures are taken care of when large crowds are expected. Professional event managers ensure SOPs are maintained. Hyderabad has witnessed several international concerts that went on smoothly.”
