KARIMNAGAR: A 30-year-old second-year LLB student died by suicide in her hostel room at Satavahana University on Sunday. Her father alleged that she took the step after her lover refused to marry her.

Chandrakala, a native of Shadnagar in Rangareddy district, was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday afternoon.

According to her father, she became acquainted with Gajjala Harikrishna of Mancherial while attending coaching classes in Hyderabad in 2024. Their friendship later developed into a relationship.

In his complaint, the student’s father alleged that Harikrishna had sexually abused his daughter and later refused to marry her. He further alleged that Harikrishna had threatened to marry another woman if she died by suicide. The victim’s father said his daughter was distressed by his attitude.

Kothapalli police registered a case based on the complaint lodged by girl’s father and began an investigation.

Meanwhile, student union representatives, Dalit activists and others staged a protest at the government hospital mortuary, demanding justice for the victim. They alleged negligence of university authorities for her death.

The protesters sought justice from university vice-chancellor Prof. U. Umesh Kumar when he visited the mortuary and demanded `25 lakh in compensation and a job for one of the deceased's family members.

The vice-chancellor assured the family of support. Responding to questions about security lapses, he denied any shortcomings and said 100 CCTV cameras had been installed on the university premises to monitor activities.
