Krishnaiah Seeks Permanent Staff For BC/SC/ST Hostels

HYDERABAD: National BC Welfare Association president and BJP Rajya Sabha member R. Krishnaiah said nearly 10 lakh students are facing tough conditions in BC, SC and ST hostels due to severe staff shortages. He called for permanent appointment of hostel workers instead of outsourcing, pointing out that workers are leaving jobs because of heavy workload and delayed salaries, which has disrupted timely meals. He said the new menu, which includes idli, vada, puri, bonda and chapati, has increased kitchen workload, but staff strength remains inadequate.
Krishnaiah demanded filling of vacant posts, regularization of workers with four years’ service, and appointment of one contract worker for every 25 students. He said each hostel should have four permanent workers — attender, watchman, storekeeper and cook — and sought five additional workers per hostel, upgrading welfare officer posts to Grade-1, sanctioning 100 new BC college hostels and 50 BC residential schools, and increasing hostel seats by 10 per cent. He stressed that students pursuing PG, degree, engineering, medicine and pharmacy courses deserve proper food and accommodation facilities.
