Hyderabad: Union coal minister G. Kishan Reddy attended a review meeting of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in Hyderabad on Friday, arriving in the distinctive blue uniform of coal workers to underscore his solidarity with the workforce.

Posting on social media after the meeting, the minister said the “blue of the Singareni coal miner’s uniform is not just a colour, it reflects the bravery, hard work and sacrifice of every Singareni worker in powering India and her potential.” He described wearing the uniform while reviewing SCCL matters as “a matter of great honour and immense pride.”

During the review at Singareni Bhavan, Reddy directed officials to frame comprehensive action plans to boost coal production, calling it “Singareni’s core strength,” and to raise quality standards. He stressed that public‑sector undertakings must operate with “complete commitment, efficiency and accountability” to stay competitive, and urged optimal use of human resources, adoption of technology and systematic planning to secure new coal blocks.

Reddy highlighted the ongoing reforms and new initiatives in the coal sector, including coal gasification, and asked management to ensure timely implementation of projects aligned with the government’s vision for a resilient, sustainable and self‑reliant coal industry. He also emphasised reducing wasteful expenditure and prioritising employee welfare.

Addressing operational risks, the minister noted current El Niño–Southern Oscillation conditions and called on SCCL management and stakeholders to take appropriate contingency measures. The meeting reviewed the company’s operational performance and roadmap for upcoming projects.

Earlier in the day, a delegation of BJP leaders submitted a memorandum to the Union minister, requesting sanction of additional coal mines to bolster Singareni’s future prospects.
