HYDERABAD: Only 61 of the estimated 600 private sewage treatment plants (STPs) under the HMWS&SB have registered with the board so far. The board has set October 25 as the deadline for the remaining STPs to complete their registration. It has said that registration was mandatory for STPs operating in apartments, gated communities, commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, industries and other private establishments.

The registration process aims to collect details of STP capacity, daily sewage treatment volumes, utilisation of treated wastewater and availability of surplus treated water, the board said in a statement, against the backdrop of a plan to use treated grey water for non-drinking purposes.

Officials said the initiative was intended to promote the reuse of treated wastewater in construction, industries, gardening and other non-potable activities to reduce pressure on drinking water resources during the coming summer. The water board has provided an online registration facility through its website. STP operators must submit details of their establishments, contact information, treatment capacity, daily wastewater treatment and surplus treated water availability.
