HYDERABAD: A 39‑year‑old private employee from Neredmet lost ₹25.75 lakh after being lured into investing in stock trading through a fraudulent online platform promoted by a woman he contacted on WhatsApp.
According to a complaint filed with Malkajgiri Cybercrime Police, the victim was approached by a woman identifying herself as Varshitha Chowdary, who claimed to be a stock market trader and investment expert. She persuaded him to invest through a website, darwinexglobal.one, by sharing trading‑related information and displaying purported profits.
Believing the platform to be genuine, the victim transferred a total of ₹25.75 lakh through multiple bank transactions. The website initially displayed profits, which made him believe his investments were genuine and generating returns.
However, when he attempted to withdraw his money, the fraudsters demanded an advance tax payment of about ₹15.44 lakh and asked him to provide his PAN details. Suspecting fraud, he realised that he had been cheated.
The victim then lodged a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal before approaching the police for legal action and recovery of the money.
Malkajgiri Cybercrime Police registered the case under BNS Sections 316(2), 319(2), 318(4) and 338, and Sections 66‑C and 66‑D of the Information Technology Act.
Police have launched an investigation to trace the money transferred to various bank accounts and identify those involved in the alleged fraud.
