Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based Abyom SpaceTech & Defence said it had secured an Indian patent for its rocket engine testing technology, adding to the company’s work on reusable liquid propulsion systems and in-house testing facilities.

The patent, numbered 600565 and granted recently, was titled ‘Device and Method for Rocket Engines Test Facility’. It covers technology developed for testing rocket engines, an important stage in evaluating their performance under controlled conditions.

Abyom founder and CEO Jainul Abedin said the patent recognised the company’s efforts to develop the technology in-house. The company has also received recognition from the Union department of scientific and industrial research (DSIR) for its in-house research and development.

Abedin said it has conducted more than 250 hot-fire tests at its facilities for the BSE-I and BSE-II engines. These include tests of an in-house 2.5-kN liquid rocket engine. Hot-fire testing involves igniting an engine under controlled conditions to assess its performance and validate its operation.

“Building the rocket is only one part of the challenge. Testing and validating the engine safely and repeatedly is equally important,” Abedin said.

The company is developing reusable liquid propulsion systems and testing infrastructure for its rocket programmes, including FRE and HOPE, which involve vertical take-off and vertical landing technology. Abyom also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with BITS Pilani on to strengthen research and development collaboration. The company is incubated at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad Technology Business Incubator.
