Hyderabad: Nearly 5,500 Fire Accidents Reported in Five Months

According to data maintained by the fire department, the highest number of fire accidents were reported in households, after farm lands and outdoor storage.

 Hyderabad: The death of 17 people in a major fire mishap at a building at Gulzar Houz in Charminar in the early hours of Sunday highlighted a shocking revelation: There were 5,407 fire accidents in the first five months of 2025. Of these 5,407, 50 were of a serious nature and 20 were major.

On May 15, fire broke out at a three-storey building in Begum Bazaar. Five fire tenders from Gowliguda, Moghalpura, High Court, Secretariat, and Salar Jung Museum stations were deployed.

On May 9, two shops were gutted at a mall in Chandanagar. Alert staff helped customers step out safely. It was caused by a short circuit.

On May 7, a choreographer, Poorkati Veerkant Reddy, was killed in a fire that erupted from his bedroom’s air conditioner at his residence in Puppalaguda.

According to data maintained by the fire department, the highest number of fire accidents were reported in households, after farm lands and outdoor storage.

In an earlier conversation, district fire officer Thangaram Venkanna had said, “As summers are approaching, we would suggest people exercise an additional layer of caution. We would highly recommend limited usage of devices like air conditioners, coolers, as their usage rises in summer. Apart from that, we would also suggest that people change their old wiring systems.”

According to an official from the fire department, fire safety awareness had become the need of the hour. “We would recommend that people use fire detection alarms, have enough ventilation facilities around them, and always inform the nearest fire station. Most mishaps can be tackled with awareness.”

If you notice a fire in a building/ an apartment:

1. Get out of the place

2. If there is smoke, crawl, do not inhale the smoke

3. After getting out, put a wet cloth around your mouth

4. Close the door from where you stepped out to avoid the smoke from spreading

5. Never wait to collect belongings

If you are trapped in a fire or are unable to come out:

1. Make ventilation available, have a window or door around that does not let smoke in, and leaves a passage for some air

2. Call the fire brigade immediately
