Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is planning to construct a 3-km four-lane elevated corridor from Banjara Hills to the PVNR Expressway near Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in Mehdipatnam to cut congestion and speed up airport connectivity.

This mega project is being designed to start from GVK One Mall in Banjara Hills and connect to the PVNR Expressway in Mehdipatnam via Masab Tank. Along with five ramps on this route, a four-lane underpass has been proposed at Masab Tank junction to eliminate traffic snarls. Officials plan to submit the DPR to the government after surveys by the consultancy are completed and aim to finish the project within two years.

The proposed corridor aims to create a seamless route to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport while decongesting key junctions, including Masab Tank, Lakdikapul, Khairatabad, and Somajiguda. The elevated stretch will reduce peak-hour travel time to the airport and ease pressure on surface roads in central Hyderabad.

To ensure smooth traffic flow on this proposed elevated corridor, ramps designed will also be designed at major junctions on this route for commuter convenience. Once this corridor is completed, one can travel signal-free from GVK One to Aramghar via Masab Tank and NMDC directly through the PVNR Expressway, and from there to the RGI Airport.

Along with this, HMDA has decided to construct a massive four-lane underpass on the route from Banjara Hills to Vijay Nagar Colony to transform the Masab Tank junction. A separate subway or pedestrian underpass is also planned here for pedestrians to cross the road.

A consultancy firm is reportedly conducting a comprehensive field-level traffic survey and soil testing in the area on peak-hour vehicle counts and the number of vehicles heading to the airport. The Detailed Project Report and construction cost estimates will be submitted to the government soon. Once administrative approvals come from the government, HMDA officials plan to call tenders and make the project available to the public in around two years.
