Green water tanker services began at the Secretariat and in the Cyberabad and Malkajgiri regions on Sunday, under the HMWS&SB initiative to supply treated wastewater for construction, gardening, landscaping and other non-drinking purposes.

The programme was launched to mark the board’s 37th foundation day and was meant to conserve drinking water and groundwater by increasing the reuse of treated wastewater, in line with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s directions.

Board managing director K. Ashok Reddy said government departments, parks and green spaces would receive priority in the supply, followed by construction projects, industries and other non-potable users. The initiative assumed significance in view of the El Nino impact putting additional pressure on drinking water resources.

In Cyberabad, municipal commissioner G. Srujana and HMWS&SB executive director Mandala Santhosh launched the service. The first supply of treated water was made using a 10-kilolitre tanker for urban biodiversity department (UBD) works.

The Mulkathguda sewage treatment plant (STP) has 16 million litres a day (MLD) of treated water available for non-drinking purposes. Supplies will also be arranged from other STPs, officials said. Government and private organisations can book green water tankers through the HMWSSB mobile application.

In Malkajgiri, services began at the Nagole, Nallacheruvu and Saroornagar STPs. Malkajgiri municipal commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy and HMWS&SB Malkajgiri regional executive director S. Pankaja launched the service at Nagole. Uppal zonal commissioner Radhika Gupta launched it at Nallacheruvu, while LB Nagar zonal commissioner Vikas Mahato launched the service at Saroornagar.

The board plans to expand the service through 19 STPs using 28 green water tankers in the first phase. Around 100 tankers belonging to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and private operators have registered to participate. Ashok Reddy said its service area had expanded from 167 square kilometres at its formation to 2,053 square kilometres.
