Warangal West MLA Naini Rajender Reddy said Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of truth, non-violence, peace and unity should continue to guide society.
Speaking at Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at the Hanamkonda District Congress office on Thursday, he said it was painful to see attempts to belittle Gandhi and glorify his assassin, Nathuram Godse.
Naini, along with Wardhannapet MLA K.R. Nagaraju, paid tributes to Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Later, they garlanded Gandhi’s statue at Public Gardens along with collectors Chahat Bajpai and Satya Sharada.
Meanwhile, journalists’ unions used the occasion to raise their long-pending demands. Members of TUWJ (IJU) paid tributes to Gandhi at the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation office and submitted a memorandum seeking health cards on a par with those provided to government employees, besides resolution of pending house and house-site issues.
Members of TUWJ (H-143) also staged a protest demanding the immediate issuance of health cards to journalists. State vice-president B.R. Lenin said journalists should receive medical facilities on par with government employees. He said letters had been sent to the Chief Minister seeking health cards.
