Funds Crunch Delays LMD Double-Decker Boat Launch
Jetty work, AC installation pending, as tourism project faces years of delay
Karimnagar: The introduction of a double-decker boat at the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) boating point has been delayed, with works remaining incomplete more than five years after initiation due to a shortage of funds.
The project, taken up by the tourism department at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore, was intended to promote water-based tourism and host small events such as birthday parties. The boat has a capacity of 120 persons, including a 40-seat dining hall on the ground floor and seating for 80 persons on the upper deck.
Hyderabad-based firm Hyderabad Boat Builders was awarded the contract, and works began in January 2021. However, the project has not been completed even after more than three years.
A key requirement, the jetty for passenger access, remains unavailable. The earlier jetty used during the construction phase has been damaged. Officials said Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh is required to build a new jetty, and the lack of funds has stalled further progress. Installation of air-conditioning systems and other minor works are also pending.
The delay has also been attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic, the absence of a jetty over an extended period and delays in inspection by the India Register of Shipping.
Authorities had planned to inaugurate the boat ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections and made another attempt eight months ago, but both plans did not materialise.
Tourist footfall at LMD has increased in recent years due to sustained water levels, with visitors showing interest in boating activities. The boating facility currently includes two jet skis, a 20-seater deluxe boat and four-seater speed boats. The double-decker boat was proposed to augment these facilities.
