Floods Ravage Lowlands as Uplands Face Water Scarcity in Undivided Warangal

The undivided Warangal district is witnessing contrasting weather conditions, with severe flooding along the Godavari basin even as upland regions continue to face drought-like conditions due to deficient rainfall.
Heavy rains in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and the upper Godavari catchment have led to massive inflows into the river, pushing water levels up and prompting authorities to issue the third flood warning in recent days.
Low-lying villages in Mangapet, Eturnagaram, Wazeedu, Ramannagudem, Charla and Bhadrachalam have been inundated. Damaged roads and overflowing streams disrupted transport and cut off several villages. Officials intensified relief and rescue operations and advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
In contrast, the upland regions of Hanamkonda, Warangal, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, Narsampet, Parkal and Wardhannapet have received below-normal rainfall. Farmers said inadequate soil moisture has affected agricultural operations, while declining groundwater levels have forced many villages to depend on new borewells for irrigation and drinking water.
The situation is particularly critical at the Mailaram Balancing Reservoir in Wardhannapet mandal, where the water level has fallen to the dead storage level. Several tanks across the district remain partially filled, while others are close to drying up. With little runoff reaching irrigation sources, concerns are mounting over water availability during the ongoing kharif season.
Farmers who have already transplanted paddy fear crop losses if rainfall does not improve in the coming weeks. Agricultural experts cautioned that prolonged dry conditions could affect standing crops, with the recent rains benefiting only limited rain-fed cultivation.
The contrasting situation of floodwaters inundating the Godavari basin while upland areas await adequate rainfall has highlighted the uneven distribution of rainfall across the undivided Warangal district. Residents have urged the government to continue relief measures in flood-affected areas while addressing drinking water and irrigation needs in drought-hit regions.
