Hyderabad:Farmers have voluntarily handed over 70 acres of land falling within the Full Tank Level (FTL) limits of Kapra Lake for its rejuvenation by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA). The agency is undertaking restoration works at a cost of Rs 35 crore, with nearly 60 per cent of the project completed.

According to a press release issued by HYDRAA, the farmers came forward to hand over the land after observing the agency's lake development initiatives. They met HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath and submitted letters of consent for the project.

The 112-acre lake includes 72 acres of land owned by local farmers. Kapra Lake is among the 14 lakes being developed under the second phase of HYDRAA's lake rejuvenation programme.

The project has three objectives: conserving the lake, improving the drainage system to channel rainwater into it and creating a cleaner environment with public amenities.

According to HYDRAA, the Central government has recognised Kapra Lake as a significant wetland that supports biodiversity and provides a habitat for migratory birds. The agency said the lake serves as a habitat for over 470 species of migratory birds arriving from different parts of the world, including Australia and Europe.

The restoration works are aimed at protecting the wetland ecosystem, improving groundwater recharge, reducing flooding during heavy rains and preserving habitats for fish, birds, amphibians and other aquatic life.

HYDRAA is also undertaking desilting to improve the lake’s natural filtration capacity and increasing its depth to enhance floodwater storage. The project includes improvements to inlet and outlet systems, fencing and development of a walking track around the lake.

The agency said the restoration would help maintain the lake’s ecological balance while providing recreational space for residents. Revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy appreciated the agency's work in a post on X, stating, ‘Good job HYDRAA…!!!’
