Excise Special Drive Nets 841 Cases, 651 Arrests Across Telangana

HYDERABAD: The prohibition and excise department said it had achieved significant results during a state wide special enforcement drive conducted between June 12 and 21 targeting illicit liquor, non-duty-paid liquor, ganja, and narcotic substances.

Teams from the special task force, enforcement wing, district task forces, and excise stations conducted coordinated raids and inspections across the state. During the operation, officials registered 841 cases, arrested 651 persons and seized 119 vehicles. In addition, officials seized 114.32 kg of ganja, 41 grams of MDMA, 310 grams of cocaine and 6.3 grams of heroin during the special drive, a statement said.

The drive, launched following instructions from enforcement director Avinash Mohanty, was undertaken on the directions of excise secretary Raghunandan Rao and excise commissioner C. Hari Kiran, with a special focus on curbing the manufacture, transportation and sale of illicit liquor, which officials said adversely affects the department's revenue.

The crackdown on illicit liquor yielded substantial results. Officials seized 3,191 litres of country liquor, destroyed 64,435 litres of jaggery wash used in its preparation, and confiscated 8,377 kilograms of jaggery.

Warangal recorded the highest number of illicit liquor cases with 260 cases and 206 arrests, followed by Karimnagar with 108 cases and 76 arrests. Nalgonda registered 86 cases and 58 arrests, while Adilabad recorded 80 cases and arrested 76 persons.

The department also seized 362.72 litres of non-duty-paid liquor across Telangana. Rangareddy topped the list with 206.56 litres seized, followed by Hyderabad with 66 litres and Medak with 49.32 litres.
