Don't Click That New Year Link on WhatsApp!
Fraudsters were exploiting festive themes by sending links disguised as bank credit card year-end offers, New Year gifts, travel discounts, event tickets, and other deals: TGCSB director Shikha Goel
HYDERABAD: With cybercriminals targeting citizens through fraudulent links during the New Year season, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued a public advisory warning against fake “Happy New Year” greetings, gifts, and offer links circulating on WhatsApp and other messaging platforms.
TGCSB director Shikha Goel said on Monday that fraudsters were exploiting festive themes by sending links disguised as bank credit card year-end offers, New Year gifts, travel discounts, event tickets, and other deals. These messages often prompt recipients to click a link to view a greeting, claim an offer, or receive a gift.
The bureau cautioned that clicking such links could lead to the silent installation of malicious APK files on mobile phones. Once installed, the malware can access OTPs, banking details, contacts, photos, and WhatsApp accounts, enabling fraudsters to impersonate victims and commit financial and social engineering frauds.
“Avoid clicking on greetings, gifts, or offer links received via WhatsApp or SMS. Never install applications or updates sent through messaging platforms, and do not share OTPs, PINs, CVV numbers, or verification codes with anyone. Enable two-step verification on WhatsApp and keep devices updated only through official app stores,” Goel advised.
Citizens who may have clicked on such links are urged to immediately disconnect internet access, uninstall suspicious applications, secure their accounts, alert their banks if necessary, and report the incident without delay.
