Hyderabad: The Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA), Telangana, has urged the Telangana Standards Authority for Safe Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) to strictly enforce prescription requirements for painkillers and antibiotics and intensify inspections of pharmacies to prevent their unauthorised sale.

It sought implementation of a September 21 circular issued by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on the indiscriminate use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics and the associated health risks.

The association said prolonged or repeated use of NSAIDs without medical advice could cause acute kidney injury or worsen existing kidney disease.

Inappropriate antibiotic use, it said, contributed to antimicrobial resistance, making infections more difficult to treat.

HRDA called for regular, risk-based inspections of medical shops, action against pharmacies violating prescription requirements, and proper maintenance of records for Schedule H1 medicines.

It also urged authorities to ensure that pharmacies display notices informing customers about prescription requirements and the risks of self-medication.
