Hyderabad:Avula Vani, wife of CRPF deputy commandant Shyam Nivas, who was killed in an exchange of fire with Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district in 2016, is seeking government employment for her children and land allotment.

Shyam Nivas, a resident of Chandrayangutta in Hyderabad's Old City, married Vani, who hailed from the Cantonment area, in 1997. The couple had two children: a daughter and a son. At the time of his death, their son was studying in Class 9, while their daughter was pursuing Intermediate education.

Vani, an MBA graduate, was offered a havildar post in the CRPF following her husband's death. However, she declined the offer because the job could involve postings anywhere in the country, making it difficult for her to care for her two children. Her daughter, a national-level netball and handball player, has since completed an MBA, while her son recently graduated in mechanical engineering.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle on Police Commemoration Day, observed annually on October 21, Vani said she manages household expenses solely through pension funds and is trying to secure government employment for her children.

"In other states, land is being provided to the family members of martyrs. So I submitted an application to the government, but I have not got justice yet. During the tenure of the then BRS government, I met the late former home minister Nayini Narsimha Reddy, as well as Union minister G. Kishan Reddy, to explain my situation. I also met with a senior police official at the time, Rajiv Trivedi; he responded promptly and had the necessary files prepared. However, I do not know why my file was stalled, nor do I know where it got held up," Vani stated.

CRPF deputy inspector-general Dr B. Veerraju said the department had taken the necessary steps in Vani's case and was continuing its efforts to support the family.

"The CRPF department will always stand by every family. We have taken all necessary departmental actions regarding Vani’s case. We are continuing our efforts to ensure justice for her. They are currently residing within our campus."

"We will continue to take departmental measures as needed to support the children of our martyrs in areas such as education, vocational training, and employment," stated Dr. B. Veerraju, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the CRPF.

Veerraju said the authorities would have to decide whether the havildar post earlier offered to Vani, which she had declined, could now be extended to either of her children.
