CM Revanth: BC Quota Must Be Central to 2029 General Elections Agenda
Revanth slams BJP on Caste Census, vows to defend BC quota ordinance, criticizes BRS for past cap
Hyderabad, July 12: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the issue of Backward Classes (BC) reservations must become the central agenda of the 2029 general elections. He said the Congress government in Telangana had completed the caste census transparently within a year, which had compelled the BJP-led government at the Centre to announce the caste census as part of the 2026 national census.
He was speaking during a meeting with BC community leaders including minister Konda Surekha, TPCC chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud, MLA Adi Srinivas, BC Welfare Association of Telangana president Jajula Srinivas Goud. They hailed the Chief Minister for bringing in the ordinance that provides 42 per cent reservations for Backward Classes in local bodies polls.
He slammed the BJP for opposing caste census and pointed out that the party had earlier filed an affidavit against it in the Supreme Court.
Calling for united support, the CM said, “Stand with me like a protective shield. If anyone challenges our BC quota ordinance in court, we will engage top lawyers from Delhi to defend it. We will socially boycott those who oppose these reservations.”
He announced that a detailed presentation on BC reservations would be given to I.N.D.I.A. bloc MPs, asserting that the real victory would be when such reservations are implemented across the country.
Revanth Reddy also criticised the previous BRS government for capping total reservations in local bodies at 50 per cent and said that the Congress government had corrected that by bringing in the ordinance for 42 per cent BC reservations.
He accused BRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao of instigating former ministers hailing from BC sections, Gangula Kamalakar, V Srinivas Goud and Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who were part of BRS government when the Act was made to cap overall reservations at 50 per cent.
Revanth Reddy said the Congress, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, had fulfilled a 100-year-old dream of BC communities by ensuring reservations in local bodies. He recalled how the Congress was responsible for providing reservations to Dalits and Backward Classes historically, and how Sonia Gandhi had made Telangana statehood a reality. “We declared February 4 as Social Justice Day and engaged all sections, including the Legislative Assembly, in discussions on caste census.”
