Karimnagar: Karimnagar police registered a case against unidentified persons for allegedly sacrificing a goat at Mannempally in Thimmapur mandal.

The complaint was filed by Adulapuram Goutham of the Stray Animal Foundation of India (SAFI), who said he was aware of around 10 such incidents of animal sacrifice but had been able to register FIRs so far in only two cases.

The alleged sacrifice took place around 3 pm on October 20.

Based on Goutham's complaint, LMD Colony police registered the FIR on November 4 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Telangana Animals and Birds Sacrifices Prohibition Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Sub-inspector Javvaji Arun was investigating the case.

Goutham said animal sacrifice remained a longstanding tradition in several villages, although some communities had begun substituting pumpkins for animals during rituals.

“Places where SAFI had previously lodged complaints did not repeat animal sacrifices the following year,” claimed Goutham, adding that he hopes that continued police intervention would gradually reduce the practice.
