Hyderabad: The Telangana Government on Monday constituted a cabinet sub-committee to review drought and El Niño conditions and recommend measures to tackle them. As per the G.O.Rt. No. 1523 issued, the sub-committee is chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, and Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, Tummala Nageswara Rao, Dasari Anasuya ( Seethakka) and Vakiti Srihar form the core members of the team, which will review conditions in the state on an ongoing basis, giving priority to advance measures so that rural areas do not face drinking water problems. With El Niño likely to reduce rainfall and put pressure on groundwater, special attention is being paid to drinking water supply and water availability in villages.

Alongside drinking water security, the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department is playing a key role in water conservation. It is prioritising the construction and maintenance of percolation pits, farm ponds, and seepage ponds to capture rainwater and recharge groundwater. By conserving water sources and helping rainwater soak into the ground, the department aims to reduce future drinking water shortages.

The department is working in coordination to identify and resolve water problems in rural areas before summer, make efficient use of available water sources, and ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply to people.
