The arrested has been identified as Rashid alias Kakoo alias Yousuf (34), a lorry driver of Rajasthan. Four persons Sohail, Faizan, all natives of Rajasthan and Shamshuddin of Uttar Pradesh were absconding.
The police seized a car, a bike, gas cutter and two mobile phones from the possession of the arrested person. The accused was involved in Axis bank ATM theft case in Shamshabad, bike theft in Pahadisherif and a car theft case in Saidabad police station limits.
The complainant, Dommeti Anil, a branch head of Axis bank on October 6, said that an alert regarding suspicious activity at the bank was received from its command centre in Mumbai.
The complainant immediately informed the police through dial 100 and instructed the branch staff to rush to the spot. Upon inspection, it was found that unknown offenders had cut open the CDM using a gas cutter, sprayed paint on the cameras, and cut the hooter cable before committing the theft of cash.
Upon verification, a cash shortage of Rs.7.40 lakh was discovered. Based on the complaint, the police took up the investigation. The police said Rashid disclosed that he had prior experience in ATM thefts and had conspired with his associates to break open an ATM and steal cash.
A month before the offence, Rashid and another accused allegedly travelled to Hyderabad in a truck carrying gas-cutting equipment and paint spray, concealing the equipment in bushes in Pahadishareef for subsequent use.
Later, Rashid and his associates arrived in Hyderabad and collected the concealed equipment. They reportedly stole a motorcycle and subsequently a Santro car to facilitate the commission of the offence.
Having identified the Axis bank ATM in Shamshabad, Fizan sprayed paint on CCTV cameras while Rashid disabled the alarm system.
The ATM was then cut open using gas-cutting equipment and cash was stolen. After committing the offence, the accused fled towards Patancheruvu, abandoning the car. They subsequently travelled through Zaheerabad, Nanded, Amaravati, Akola, Indore, and Kota in Rajasthan before separating and returning to their respective places.
Following technical analysis and Call Detail Records (CDRs), the Shamshabad police traced Rashid at Gollapally crossroads. During interrogation, Rashid disclosed that the stolen money had been divided among the accused while travelling in a sleeper bus.
He reportedly received Rs.90,000 as his share, out of which he spent Rs.85,500 on personal expenses. Rashid has an extensive criminal background with 46 cases previously registered against him across Gurugram, Delhi, Faridabad, Rewari, and other jurisdictions.
