BRS Calls Karimnagar Bandh Over BJP Attack
Police detained MLA Gangula Kamalakar when he tried to leave his residence to lead the protest: Reports
KARIMNAGAR: The BRS called for a city-wide bandh in Karimnagar on Saturday to protest the attack by BJP activists on Huzurabad MLA Padi Koushik Reddy’s car and party office furniture. Police deployed heavy security at sensitive locations from early morning following the bandh call.
Police detained MLA Gangula Kamalakar when he tried to leave his residence to lead the protest. He was shifted to the LMD Police Station. The detention led to protests by BRS workers, who raised slogans against the government and the BJP and burnt an effigy of the state government.
Former mayor Ravinder Singh and BRS city president Challa Harishankar were also detained. Choppadandi MLA Sunke Ravishankar was intercepted at Burugupalli and placed under house arrest. Police said over 100 party workers were taken into custody and shifted to various stations in the district. Pushing incidents were reported between police and protesters. BRS leaders alleged use of excessive force and said women activists were manhandled by male officers.
Police said the detentions were required to maintain law and order. The bandh remained partial across the city under heavy security.
