Hyderabad:The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday for a speed breeding facility worth Rs 12 crore at Indian Institute of Rice Research (ICAR-IIRR) where a modern seed godown built at a cost of Rs 1.6 crore was also inaugurated.

Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) secretary and Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) M.L. Jat laid the foundation stone for the speed breeding facility — an advanced agricultural system that accelerates plant growth cycles through controlled climate conditions.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Jat appreciated ICAR-IIRR for its scientific contributions to rice research and said the new infrastructure marks a significant step towards integrating advanced research with efficient seed systems.

He mentioned that the two facilities would strengthen quality seed availability for farmers.

“Strengthening research and seed systems is essential for realising the vision of Viksit Krishi for Viksit Bharat,” he said.

He also inaugurated the modern seed godown. The newly-established facilities aim to accelerate the development of improved rice varieties with higher yield, enhanced climate resilience and greater stress tolerance.

The speed breeding facility is expected to significantly shorten crop breeding cycles while the modern seed godown will ensure safe storage and timely distribution of quality seeds.
