HYDERABAD: In a departure from its earlier practice of announcing candidates well in advance, the Telangana BJP has decided to defer naming its candidates for the two Graduates’ constituencies in the Legislative Council elections scheduled for March 2027. The leadership is adopting a cautious approach to prevent internal friction and assess the evolving electoral situation.

According to party sources, around 30 aspirants are competing for each seat, making the selection process highly sensitive. The contest is particularly intense for the Mahabubnagar–Rangareddy–Hyderabad constituency, which covers 43 Assembly segments.

While the delay is intended to keep all factions engaged in voter enrolment and organisational work, some aspirants privately fear it could weaken the party’s campaign preparedness. “An early campaign is essential as it covers all constituencies of erstwhile united districts and involves expansive networks to reach hundreds of thousands of registered voters. The candidate must have sufficient time to travel, meet graduates and build a network. Waiting too long could put us at a disadvantage,” a ticket aspirant said on condition of anonymity.

Party leaders, however, believe that an early announcement could intensify competition and trigger resentment among those denied tickets. With around 30 aspirants for each seat, the leadership is wary of alienating influential leaders and their supporters.

The electoral rolls for both constituencies are being prepared afresh. Eligible graduates, including those enrolled earlier, must submit fresh Form‑18 applications. The deadline is November 6, while draft rolls will be published on November 25 and final rolls on December 30.

The elections will test the BJP’s influence among educated and urban voters, including professionals, employees and the middle class. The party also views the polls as an opportunity to assess its organisational machinery ahead of the GHMC elections and the 2028 Assembly polls.

The BJP leadership is studying the strengths and local networks of the Congress nominees before finalising its candidates. Amid the BRS’ efforts to recover lost ground, party sources said the national leadership has firmly directed the state unit to maximise voter enrolment and intensify outreach.
